Are Virgin Voyages Plus-Size Friendly?

Embarking on a voyage with Virgin Voyages is not just a cruise; it’s an experience designed to embrace every traveler, regardless of size or mobility concerns. In this blog post, I’ll explore the plus-size-friendly features that set Virgin Voyages apart, from their inclusive attitude to the thoughtfully designed venues and accommodations on board. Join me as I navigate a sea of possibilities, providing tips and insights to ensure an enjoyable and stress-free cruise for my fellow plus-size travelers.

First, let me tell you about me if you are new here. I am a Torrid size 26/28. I am also tall at 5’11”. In the last couple of years, I have gone through some health struggles (Cancer, mental health problems, and a few other issues) so my physical endurance has slipped a bit. To still enjoy life I decided to invest in a mobility scooter until my physical endurance returns. Visiting Walt Disney World is important to me and I wasn’t going to let my health prevent me from going there. Just like I am not going to let my health stop me from traveling in my favorite way, cruising.

I decided to give Virgin Voyages a try. I loved their mission, they want to be different from other cruise lines and known for their inclusivity, adult-only cruises, exceptional service, and sustainable practices. I can get behind that mission.

Virgin Voyages is Very Inclusive

Virgin Voyages sets the stage for an inclusive haven, where diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated. From the moment sailors step aboard, they become part of a culture that embraces individuals of all backgrounds, sizes, and identities. The crew embodies this commitment to inclusivity, creating a welcoming environment that fosters genuine connections. Never once did I feel like an inconvenience because I was in a mobility scooter or because of my size. This also included reactions from other sailors.

Are Virgin Voyages Cabins Plus-Size Friendly?

While I did not stay in a regular cabin, I do know that they are ok when it comes to being plus-size friendly. What I love about the bathroom is that the door does not open into the bathroom but out. Some cruise line doors open into the bathroom taking up precious bathroom square footage. On Virgin Voyages the toilet space may be tight but it is not horrible at all. There is room to stretch out your legs. The shower is also tall and spacious even with having a door rather than a curtain. The public bathrooms are huge!

The layout of the room is walkable. The stool for the desk area is a bit low if you happen to have knee issues but that is a minor thing.

On the Sea Terrace, there are chairs without arms and Virgin’s famous red hammocks. The hammocks do have a weight limit of 350 pounds.

Virgin Voyages Accessible Cabin Review

Since I had a mobility scooter I had to stay in an accessible cabin. Accessible cabins have a large bathroom to accommodate wheelchair users. The shower was tall but did seem a little crowded due to the shower chair. On the plus side, there was a shower curtain so it didn’t matter if I left it open and water went outside the “cube”.

The bed in an accessible cabin is not a convertible bed like in the regular rooms. There is a lot of room to get around. I had plenty of space to store my scooter when not in use. To get to the sea terrace there is a ramp leading to and onto so you can ride your mobility device onto the balcony.

Plus-Size Friendliness of the Ship Spaces

On Virgin Voyages you do not need to wonder about finding if you are going to find accessible seating and activities onboard. Let me highlight several areas I was impressed with.

  • Seating around the ship. Wanting to relax around the ship? The ship has plenty of space for you to catch some sun in a sturdy lounger. Inside the ship comfy seating abounds so you can enjoy the live music, onboard activities, or just relax.
  • B-Complex Gym. Part of Virgin Voyages is getting enough Vitamin Sea and balance in life. The gym is plus-size friendly and even has recumbent bikes. There are a lot of fitness classes onboard as well and the instructors do suggest alternative moves. There is a 200 lb weight limit on the UpSwing Bungee class so that is one class I was not able to try.
  • Restaurant Seating. I found most of the seating in the dining venues to be plus-size friendly. If I did see an uncomfortable seating spot, I just let my server know I needed a different table. They were happy to accommodate.

Tips for Plus-Size Virgin Voyages Sailors

Wear Whatever You Want: Pack your favorite outfits that make you feel amazing. Virgin Voyages embraces individuality, so wear what makes you comfortable and confident. I wore my 2 piece swimsuit and never got a side eye or nasty look from anyone, crew or other sailors. The inclusive atmosphere is just amazing!

Choose the Right Stateroom: Prioritize comfort when choosing your stateroom. Virgin Voyages offers spacious accommodations. From single sailor staterooms to Mega RockStar Quarters there are plenty of options to give you all the space you could ever need.

Advocate for Yourself. If something is not ok for you like you were seated in a booth but would prefer chairs, let someone know. The Virgin Voyages crew members are there for you and to make you comfortable.

Make New Friends. Connect with fellow cruisers. Virgin Voyages fosters a sense of community, so don’t hesitate to make new friends and share your experiences with others on this incredible journey.

Try it All. From dining to entertainment, try it all. Explore the diverse dining options on board. From casual to upscale, there’s something for every palate. Don’t hesitate to try it all and savor the culinary delights without reservations. Test Kitchen was my favorite!

Participate in the various onboard activities. Whether it’s a fitness class, spa day, or live entertainment, there’s a wide range of options for everyone to enjoy.
