Disney’s Hocus Pocus Fun Facts

When it comes to family-friendly Halloween movies, Disney has a lot to choose from! Disney’s cult classic Hocus Pocus is one of my favorites! Do you realize it has been over 20 years since this movie came out? Wow! Here are some Hocus Pocus Fun Facts and Trivia.

The Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus

“Hocus Pocus” is a bewitching comedy film that follows the misadventures of three witches resurrected in modern-day Salem. Max, a teenager, accidentally brings the witches back to life on Halloween night. Alongside his sister Dani, his crush Allison, and a talking cat named Binx, they must stop the witches from stealing the souls of children to achieve immortality. As chaos ensues, the group faces humorous and spooky encounters, ultimately outsmarting the witches and saving the day.

10 Things You May Not Know About Disney’s Hocus Pocus

It is not a Disney Channel Movie. The film was intended to be a Disney Channel original movie, but when higher-ups saw the script they felt it was strong enough for a theatrical release with well-known actors.

Bette Milder Statue. There were seven statues made of Bette Midler for the scene in which she bursts in the sunlight toward the end of the movie. One of the statues, along with Winnie’s spell book, was housed at the Planet Hollywood restaurant in Orlando, Florida.

Siblings Playing a Married Couple. Brother and sister Garry Marshall and Penny Marshall play husband and wife. He’s the one dressed as Satan.

Favorite Movie? During a February 10, 2008 interview on the BBC show “Breakfast”, Bette Midler stated that out of all of her films, this was her favorite.

Edgar Allan Poe or No? Despite the common internet myth that the poem Sarah Sanderson sings is a shortened version of an Edgar Allan Poe poem, no references to such a poem exist in any of his works, nor does it carry the style or any of the known meters he would have used. It was written specifically for the film, then later expanded, and rumors on the internet about its connection to Poe would persist until now most people are under the impression that it is one of his works.

Not Quite Hidden Film Crew. In the scene in the Dennison’s kitchen, you can see the camera crew in the reflection.

Sunday School? The film is set on Halloween (31st October) 1993. At the start of the film, Max is shown at school on Halloween. However, Halloween 1993 was actually a Sunday.

Hocus Pocus 2? Yes, Hocus Pocus 2 came out in September 2022.

Binx, Binx, Binx. Due to the length of the film and the variety of tricks Binx performs, several cats were used on the “Hocus Pocus” set. Sometimes even animatronic cats were used.

Billy Butcherson’s Moths. Do you know the scene where Billy Butsherson finally cuts his mouth open? It’s kind of creepy but cool. Well, the moths were real! In a 2018 interview with Bloody Disgusting, makeup and special-effects designer Tony Gardner said that the actor wore a “mouth rig” — a latex pocket attached to dentures that blocked off Jones’ throat — to make the moths come out.

Who are the Sanderson Sisters?

Winifred Sanderson: Winifred is played by Bette Midler. She is the leader of the Sanderson sisters and the main antagonist. She is the oldest of the three and is highly sensitive to people calling her ugly. She has a very short temper. Out of the three, she is the smartest. She has the power to manipulate energies and electrical currents with her mind.

Mary Sanderson: Mary is played by Kathy Najimy. Often complimenting and comforting Winifred, she constantly seeks her approval. Her power is the ability to sniff out the presence of children and has a tendency to bark in a Curly Howard-like fashion.

Sarah Sanderson: Sarah is played by Sarah Jessica Parker. She is the youngest. She is the prettiest of the sisters and flirts a lot but not exactly smart. Her power is the ability to lure children by singing. She sings a song called “Come Little Children”.
