Disney's Haunted Mansion Movie Review

I am a huge fan of the Haunted Mansion ride at the Magic Kingdom, so I was excited to see what the movie was like. I didn’t think the Haunted Mansion movie would be all that creepy because it had Eddie Murphy in it, well, I was wrong.

Haunted Mansion Movie Review

What I loved most about the movie is the attention to detail. It very closely replicated scenes from the Haunted Mansion Ride at the Magic Kingdom.

The movie starts off pretty well. I like the beginning credits scene when they are partly showing the back story of what happened in the mansion. Then the movie moves to the present with Eddie Murphy playing a realtor. His character is business minded, rather than family-minded, and gets him in trouble at home. The owner of the mansion contacts his wife, Sarah, and invites her to come and visit the mansion. On their way to a nice family weekend, they go to the Haunted Mansion.

Most of the movie is hilarious as you see Eddie Murphy’s reactions to what is going on around him. The only parts that are intensely scary are the crypt scene and the final scenes where the butler is being dealt with. Most of the ghosts are friendly, including lovely Madame Lolita. This is not a young children’s movie by any means but would be ok for tweens and teens.

The movie dives into the spiritual realm a bit more than I would like. At the end you see one of the ghosts go to hell. It is pictured pretty accurately, but of course, pays no reference to faith- just deeds done.

Overall, I give this movie 4/5 stars. It is a great movie to watch especially at Halloween time!
