How to Make Fresh Mango Salsa
Do you ever associate a food with a feeling? Mango reminds me of the first time I had it. I have always been a pretty picky person when it comes to fruit. It has to be just right texture wise. My husband is way less picky. Well, we were at Trader Joe’s and mango was in season so I picked some up never having it before. I was a little leery of tasting it bit my husband said I would love it.
I closed my eyes and my husband fed it to me. I loved it! The mango was perfectly ripe and had such a sweet taste. I now associate mangos with feelings of romance. I love anything mango and this salsa is a perfect combination for my love of mangos and salsa!
Ingredients Needed to Make Mango Salsa
- 3 Fresh Mangos
- 1 Serrano or Jalapeno Pepper
- 10 sprigs of Cilantro
- 1 Red Bell Pepper
- 1/4 Red Onion
- 2 Limes
- Salt to taste
Picking and Preparing the Mangos for Salsa
When picking a mango you will want to squeeze gently to judge ripeness. A ripe mango will give slightly, indicating soft flesh inside. Don’t judge a mango on color as that is not a factor in ripeness. Ripe mangos will sometimes have a fruity aroma at their stems.
To prepare the mango, wash the mango first. Rinse your mangos under running water and gently rub them with your hands and fingers to remove any residue. Make sure to do this before cutting, so bacteria isn’t transferred from your knife to the mangos.
To cut the mango, you will need to cut around the mango pit. mango has a slightly flat oblong pit in the center of it. Cut along the sides of the pit, separating the mango flesh from the pit. Holding the mango with one hand, stand it on its end, stem side down. With a sharp knife in your other hand, cut from the top of the mango, down one side of the pit.
Then repeat with the other side. You should end up with three pieces: two halves, and a middle section that includes the pit.
Take a mango half and use a knife to make lengthwise and crosswise cuts in it, but try not to cut through the peel. Invert the mango half so that the cut segments are sticking out like a hedgehog.
At this point, you may be able to peel the segments right off of the peel with your fingers. Or, you can use a small paring knife to cut away the pieces from the peel.
Preparing a Dicing the Peppers and Onions
Rinse the peppers real well under running water and gently rub them with your hands and fingers to remove any residue. You may want to wear gloves during the cutting of the peppers. Also, make sure not to touch your face or eyes when you are cutting the peppers, it will burn.
If you want a spicier, more intense heat in your salsa, leave the seeds in the serrano or jalapeno pepper. If you just want the smoky, spice flavor take out all the seeds. Slice the peppers into strips and then dice into small chunks.
Remove the seeded pit of the red pepper (orange and yellow could also be used) and slice the pepper into strips and then dice into chunks.
Slice and dice the red onion.
Dice the cilantro.
Before you slice the limes to juice them, squeeze them slightly or roll them along the counter. That will make juicing them a lot easier. Slice the limes in half and juice them.
Preparing the Salsa
- Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl.
- Add lime juice and salt to taste.
- Enjoy.
