I am super excited to share with you how to make your own DIY Tinker Bell ornament! Tinker Bell has been warming hearts since she first made her appearance in 1904. How can a person not just love Tinker Bell? She is happy, helpful, and knows a thing or two about making stuff.
If you love making your own Christmas ornaments and are addicted to Disney, you really need to see this ornament. It’s EASY to make and is positively adorable, just like Tinker Bell. You can always go out and buy ornaments, but it will end up being rather expensive. Making your own is a blast and saves you loads of money too.
Easy DIY Tinker Bell Ornament
Whether you are making this DIY Tinker Bell ornament for yourself or giving it away as a gift, I can promise it’s going to be loved. You only need 4 materials and 2 tools to complete this DIY ornament. Because they are so easy and inexpensive, you could even make them for selling at craft shows too. The options are endless!
- Floor Finish
- Glass Ornament
- Green Glitter – Fine glitter is better than chunkier glitter as it spreads more evenly. Go for a brighter color like Tinker Bell’s dress than a typical tree green. The Dollar Tree has the perfect shade!
- White Glitter Foam
- Ribbon or string for hanging
- Hot Glue Gun
How to Make A Tinker Bell Ornament
Step 1 – Prep the ornament. Remove the top of the ornament and pour a little bit of rubbing alcohol in the ornament and swish it around. This will remove any dirt, oils, or residues and make it easier for the floor cleaner to adhere to the surface. Air dry completely before moving to the next step.
Step 2 – Add Floor Cleaner. Pour a small amount of floor finish into the ornament. Swirl the finish around the entirety of the ornament and drain any excess. If you are doing more than one ornament then using an old egg carton makes a perfect stand for the excess cleaner to drip out.
Step 3 – Pour in Glitter. Carefully pour in your glitter (shimmering fairy dust) and again swirl that around and pour out any excess. Make sure the entire inner surface is covered. Let dry.
Step 4 – Make and Attach the Wings. Next, you’ll want to draw out Tinkerbell’s Wings, I chose to freehand them but if you need assistance you can always print a stencil and use that. I found it easier to first cross the wings over one another and glue those together first and then you will want to glue it to the ornament itself.
Step 5 – Apply Finishing Touches. Replace the top of the ornament, making sure the wire doesn’t scratch away any glitter. Tie a ribbon or string around the ornament’s neck to serve as a hanger. Choose a color that complements your design and adds an extra touch of whimsy. Be sure to tie a secure knot to prevent the ornament from slipping off the tree.
Do I Have To Use Glass Ornament?
Overall, the results are better when you make this Tinker Bell ornament with glass. The floor cleaner spreads nicely, and the glitter sticks to it perfectly. You can always try plastic if that is what you have on hand, but it may not give you the exact results that you are looking for.
What Else Can Be Used to Adhere the Glitter to the Ornament?
While the traditional method of using floor cleaner to coat the ornament’s interior is effective, there are alternatives that can yield equally stunning results. Two popular options are Polycrylic and Mod Podge. These versatile substances offer excellent adhesion and durability, ensuring your ornament remains intact for years to come.
Polycrylic is a water-based protective finish that dries clear and provides a glossy sheen. It is often used as a sealant for wood projects but can also be applied to glass and plastic surfaces. When using Polycrylic, it is crucial to apply it evenly, allowing it to coat the entire interior of the ornament. Be mindful of any excess product, as it can leave streaks or clumps. Allow the ornament to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Mod Podge is a popular crafting adhesive and sealer that comes in various formulas. While Mod Podge offers a versatile solution for creating unique effects on your ornament, it is important to note that using it on the interior may pose some challenges. Mod Podge tends to dry with a milky or cloudy appearance, which can obscure the vibrancy of the glitter.
How Do You Store Ornaments?
There are several different options & tips on how to store ornaments. Here are a few ideas to try:
- Wrap in Tissue Paper – Carefully wrap each glass ornament in tissue paper. This will give them a slight cushion. It’s best to wrap them a few times.
- Use Bubble Wrap – Bubble wrap isn’t just something fun to play with; you can use it to wrap your ornaments too. Wrap each ornament individually.
- Storage Container – No matter how you wrap the ornaments, be sure to add them to a storage container. They make organizers that are intended for ornaments.
- Away From Sunlight – Keep the storage container away from direct sunlight. It can make them fade, and they won’t last as long.
- Make Sure It’s Sturdy – Never use a flimsy cardboard box. The box should be strong and sturdy. This way, you don’t have to worry about the bottom giving out once you fill it.
Creating your own Tinker Bell ornament is a delightful way to infuse the Christmas season with a touch of Disney magic. As you embark on this creative journey, let your imagination soar and enjoy the process of bringing Tinker Bell to life. May your DIY Tinker Bell ornament illuminate your holiday season with the enchantment and wonder of Neverland!
