Free Date Idea | Geocaching

If you’re like me, you want to spend quality time with your spouse and you don’t always have extra money to go on the traditional, boring dinner and movie. A little over a year ago my husband and I discovered geocaching. Geocaching is a great date idea when you are tight on money!

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a big worldwide scavenger hunt using GPS coordinates. As long as you have a phone with GPS or a GPS unit, you are good to go.

Usually, you don’t even need to travel in a car to find some caches. My husband and I were able to find about 5 of them within a mile of our house. You don’t need to contribute a geocache, you just go on the hunt for them.

Why Geocaching is a Great Free Date Idea

You get some exercise while you hunt and even though you are using the phone, you are not distracted by it. My husband and I made a game out of it, we competed on who found the item first. If we both couldn’t find the geocache we would team up and look together.

Make the date complete with a nice picnic lunch or dinner!

Geocaching Lingo

BYOP
Bring Your Own Pen/Pencil. An acronym often used by cache owners to communicate to other geocachers that you will need to bring your writing utensil in order to sign the cache logbook.
DNF
Did Not Find. An acronym used by geocachers to state that they did not find a cache. This is also a type of online log on Geocaching.com and is useful for alerting cache owners of potential issues. Cache owners who repeatedly receive “Did Not Find” logs should check to see that their cache has not been removed.
Geocache
A container hidden that includes, at a minimum, a logbook for geocachers to sign.
Geocaching
Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache.
TFTC
Thanks For The Cache. An acronym written by geocachers in physical cache logbooks or online when logging cache finds.

How you ever tried geocaching? Did you have luck finding a lot of them? Let me know in the comments.
