DIY Dole Whip

Do you love getting at Dole Whip while at the Disney World Resort? After trying my first Dole Whip a couple of weeks ago I fell in love with them. I knew I had to make my own version at home. I looked up the ingredients and found out the Dole Whip is very, very processed. I decided to come up with a DIY Dole Whip that seems more real to me.

The Creation of the Dole Whip

First, let’s start with the birth of the Pineapple King. James Drummond Dole traveled to Hawai’i in 1899 to prove that Hawai’i could also be part of the farming boom that was taking place on the mainland. The following year, he bought a 61-acre tract of land in Wahiawa, where he established the first plantation of what would in later years become an agricultural empire that reached around the world. Dole wasn’t the first person to grow pineapple in Hawai`i, but he was the first to realize its tremendous potential—and he eventually became known across America as the Pineapple King.

Sadly, Mr. Dole died before the creation of the Dole Whip but if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t even have the iconic treat.

Dole Food Company didn’t introduce the soft-serve to the public until the mid-80s. Disney helped tremendously in its’ popularity. Disneyland and Disney World were not the first to serve the Dole Whip since they didn’t sell it until 1986 and even then it was not the “Dole Whip” as Dole didn’t become a sponsor until 8 years later.

Did you know that other places sell Dole Whips too? The ice cream is sold nationwide at zoos, universities, and other amusement parks. Anyone who sells the official Dole Whip needs to use the company’s commercial soft serve machine that gives the ice cream a “unique air texture”. All they have to do is add water to the powder mix and get it going.

The original Dole Whip is made with non-dairy creamer, sugar, and natural flavoring and coloring.

Warning: The original Dole Whip is dairy-free, this version has dairy in it.

How to Make a DIY Disney Dole Whip

Ingredients You Will Need:

  • 4 ounces of pineapple juice
  • 1 big scoop of vanilla ice cream (around 1 cup)
  • 2 cups frozen pineapple chunks
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • pinch of salt (the salt elevates the pineapple taste)

Dole Whip Instructions

Step 1 – Blend the pineapple until you have a smooth consistency.

Step 2 – Add the rest of the ingredients into the blender and blend until smooth.

Step 3 – Pour into a gallon-sized bag.

Step 4 – Freeze for 30-40 minutes for a soft-serve consistency.

Step 5 – Cut the bottom corner of the bag and swirl the Dole Whip into the serving dish. This step is completely optional. You can just scoop it out but I like to have it look more like Disney’s version.

It does not taste identical to the Disney version, but it is close enough for me to imagine sitting in Adventureland or relaxing at the Polynesian resort.

If you want the exact Dole Whip at Disney you can buy the Dole Pineapple Soft Serve Mix from Amazon, unfortunately, they only sell it in very large quantities.

Dole Whip Variations

Make it for Grown Ups. Add 1-2 ounces of your favorite Rum to make it alcoholic.

Transform the regular Dole Whip into a Dole Whip Float. Simply add 4-6 ounces of Pineapple juice to the bottom of the glass and then swirl the Dole Whip in. Top with a cherry if preferred.

Make it a Different Flavor. Dole now has more flavors, so let’s create more versions of this homemade version. Over the years I’ve seen flavors like mango, lime, raspberry, strawberry, cherry, orange, lemon, and coconut. Just replace the pineapple with a fruit of your choice.

Make it Dairy Free. Switch out the ice cream for a non-dairy frozen treat.

Dole Whip is a must anytime I'm at Disney. I love the idea of using sherbet in the homemade version. It looks so creamy.
