Timeless Christmas Traditions to Keep Alive

Christmas is one of the best times of the year to be nostalgic! I know for me it begins when I decorate my tree and pull out all my old ornaments. While some traditions have changed throughout the years with the digital age, some should be timeless. Help keep these old Christmas traditions alive in today’s modern, busy world.

Christmas Traditions

The reason these Christmas traditions are slipping away is that we are simply too busy. Slow down this Christmas season and savor the season.

Sending Real Christmas Cards

While I adore opening my Facebook on Christmas morning and seeing lots of Christmas messages in my feed, nothing beats getting a nice real Christmas in the mail. I like displaying the cards around my house and save them for sentimental reasons. Sometimes I even remake them into ornaments or put them into scrapbooks instead of stickers.

Baking Cookies Together

Sometimes my husband and I have a baking day. Last year I had a baking day with friends. Whoever you share a baking day with you are sharing more than recipes, you are sharing treasured memories that will be remembered long after the person is gone. My husband’s Grandma passed away this year. I wish I would have had the chance to learn some of her recipes before she got to the point where she didn’t bake much.

Driving Around Looking at Christmas Lights

I remember as a child piling up in the car and driving around looking at Christmas lights. Not nearly as many people now decorate their homes, but some neighborhoods still go all out. Do a little research to see where the Christmas lights are in your hometown. Take along some hot cocoa and cookies and enjoy the lights together!

Family Movie Night

Even without kids my husband and I share a family movie night watching classic Christmas movies and cartoons. What is Christmas without The Miracle on 34th Street, It’s a Wonderful Life, or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Introduce your children to your childhood favorites! I have a list of Disney Christmas Movies your family will love!

Cookie Exchange Parties

While sharing recipes on Facebook can be fun, having a real-life cookie exchange is much better. A bunch of friends getting together and eating cookies, what is better than that? Not only do you share and swap recipes, but you also get to have quality time with friends.

Christmas Caroling

This is one tradition I want to be alive again. I actually don’t know anyone that still does this. When I was a child I would carol at nursing homes, but I know they don’t do that much anymore. Last year some of my friends went to Disney World dressed in Christmas dresses, and rode the train around while singing Christmas carols. Hopefully, that gets repeated!
