As soon as I enter Magic Kingdom, my eyes naturally search for Cinderella Castle. Before walking down Main Street, U.S.A., though, I always notice the American flag flying proudly above Town Square.
Many guests hurry past this area because they are excited to begin their park day. However, that same flag becomes the focus of one of Magic Kingdom’s most meaningful traditions each afternoon.
The Disney World Flag Retreat Ceremony is a short patriotic ceremony held near the flagpole in Town Square. It honors the United States, military veterans, and active-duty service members.

Almost every time I watch it, it brings me to tears.
What Is the Disney World Flag Retreat Ceremony?
The Flag Retreat Ceremony is the formal lowering of the American flag at Magic Kingdom. Disney has continued this tradition since the park’s opening in 1971.
The ceremony usually takes place at 5:00 PM and lasts about 15 minutes. However, entertainment schedules can change due to weather, special events, or park operations. Check the My Disney Experience app on the day of your visit for the scheduled time.
You do not need a separate reservation or ticket beyond your Magic Kingdom admission.
Where Is the Flag Retreat Ceremony Held?
The ceremony takes place around the flagpole in Town Square. You will find Town Square immediately after passing beneath the Walt Disney World Railroad station.
The flagpole stands near the center of the landscaped area. The Theatre is on one side of Town Square, while the Main Street Fire Station is on the other.
For a good view, arrive about 15 to 20 minutes early. The area closest to the flagpole can fill quickly, especially around holidays.
That said, you do not need to stand directly beside the flagpole to appreciate the ceremony. You can usually see and hear it from several points around Town Square.
What Happens During the Flag Retreat Ceremony?
The exact performers and musical selections may vary. Typically, members of Disney’s Security Color Guard participate alongside Magic Kingdom entertainers.

Guests may be invited to join in the Pledge of Allegiance. Patriotic songs are performed as the American flag is lowered with care.
The Color Guard then folds the flag according to tradition. A veteran selected for that day may assist and receive the folded flag during the presentation.

Afterward, the veteran and Color Guard may take part in a short procession through part of Main Street, U.S.A. It is a brief moment, but the respect shown by Cast Members and nearby guests makes it incredibly powerful.
Best of all, the ceremony offers a quiet pause during a busy park day. For a few minutes, rides, dining reservations, and attraction wait times fade into the background.
How Is the Veteran of the Day Selected?
Disney may invite a visiting veteran to serve as the Veteran of the Day. Selection is not something guests can reserve before their vacation, and participation is never guaranteed.
If a veteran in your family would be honored to participate, you may politely ask a Cast Member at City Hall early in the day. Disney has previously described the selection as random, so asking does not guarantee an invitation.
The selected veteran may receive commemorative items, such as a certificate or photographs. These details can change, so I would not make them an expected part of the experience.
For the veteran selected, the greatest keepsake is often the memory of representing fellow service members during such a meaningful ceremony.
Tips for Watching the Flag Retreat
Arrive early
Plan to reach Town Square about 15 to 20 minutes before the listed start time. This gives you time to find a comfortable viewing spot.
Check the entertainment schedule
The ceremony often begins at 5:00 PM, but you should confirm the time in the My Disney Experience app.
Be respectful
Guests may be asked to stand or remove their hats during the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. Follow the instructions provided by Cast Members.

Consider watching near the end of your park day
Town Square is close to the park exit. The ceremony can be a meaningful final experience before leaving Magic Kingdom.
Give the procession room
Cast Members may guide guests away from part of the route. Stay behind any ropes or marked areas and keep walkways open.
Is the Flag Retreat Ceremony Accessible?
The ceremony is held outdoors in an accessible section of Town Square. Guests using wheelchairs, scooters, or other mobility devices can remain in their devices while watching.
There is no formal seating area. Most guests stand around the flagpole, so arrive early if you need an unobstructed view.
For example, guests who are sensitive to crowds may feel more comfortable watching from the outer edge of Town Square. The music and announcements may be loud for guests with sensory sensitivities.
The area offers little protection from the Florida sun or rain. Bring any mobility, cooling, or weather supplies you may need.
If you require assistance finding a suitable viewing location, ask a nearby Cast Member before the ceremony begins.
Why Are the Other American Flags on Main Street Not Lowered?
Once you know where to look, you may notice several red, white, and blue “flags” above the Main Street buildings. However, these decorations are not complete American flags.
Some have an incorrect number of stars or stripes. Others are missing part of the traditional flag design. Because they do not meet the official design of the American flag, they are generally described as decorative pennants.

The U.S. Flag Code says the American flag is customarily displayed outdoors from sunrise to sunset. A flag may remain displayed overnight when it is properly illuminated.
Disney lowers the official American flag in Town Square during the ceremony. The altered rooftop pennants can remain in place as part of Main Street’s patriotic décor.
It is one of those small Disney details that many guests never notice.
Is the Disney Flag Retreat Worth Watching?
In my opinion, yes. However, I may not make it a priority during a family’s first Magic Kingdom visit when their wish list is already full. If a family is very patriotic or has a Veteran is their family it makes the experience a bit more touching though.
For returning guests, the Flag Retreat Ceremony is a wonderful way to experience something beyond the attractions. It only takes about 15 minutes and offers a completely different kind of Disney memory.
There is something moving about standing in Town Square while voices fill Main Street with patriotic music. Watching Cast Members honor the Veteran of the Day always reminds me that some of the most powerful Disney moments are not found on a ride.
If you have time during your Magic Kingdom day, pause near Town Square and watch this beautiful tradition. You may find yourself wiping away a few tears, too.
